Understanding Bitcoin Denominations
Bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places. As its price has grown from fractions of a penny to tens of thousands of dollars, smaller denominations have become essential for everyday use. Just as you wouldn't quote a coffee price in millions of dollars, you wouldn't quote a Lightning payment in whole Bitcoin.
| Unit | Symbol | In BTC | In Satoshis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | BTC | 1 | 100,000,000 |
| Millibitcoin | mBTC | 0.001 | 100,000 |
| Microbitcoin | bits / μBTC | 0.000001 | 100 |
| Satoshi | sat / sats | 0.00000001 | 1 |
The satoshi (often abbreviated "sat") is named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. At current prices, individual satoshis are worth fractions of a cent — making them the natural unit for micropayments, Lightning Network transactions, and everyday Bitcoin thinking.
Many Bitcoin wallets, exchanges, and community members now default to "sats" as the standard denomination. This converter supports all four common denominations, letting you switch instantly between BTC, mBTC, bits, and sats using the unit selector above.
How to Use This Converter
Type any amount in either the Bitcoin or USD field — the other updates instantly. No button clicks, no page reloads. The conversion uses the most recent BTC/USD trade price, refreshed automatically every 60 seconds.
Switch units using the segmented control above the converter. Choosing "sats" lets you work in satoshis directly — enter "1000000" to see what one million sats is worth in USD.

About the Exchange Rate
The BTC/USD price shown here comes from institutional-grade market data providers that aggregate pricing data from major cryptocurrency exchanges. If the primary source is unavailable, the converter automatically falls back to alternative feeds for reliability.
Because this is a last trade price rather than a bid/ask midpoint, the value you see represents an actual transaction — not a theoretical average. The price updates every 60 seconds when the page is active and pauses when you switch to another tab to conserve resources.
The freshness indicator in the top-right corner of the price display shows how recently the price was fetched. Green means fresh (under 30 seconds), yellow means slightly stale (30–60 seconds), and red means the data may be outdated. The live price is also shown in your browser tab for at-a-glance monitoring.
